Feds toss out reality star Julie Chrisley's fraud sentence
Appeals court orders new sentencing hearing in Chrisley Knows Best case
Reality TV star Julie Chrisley's sentence for bank fraud and tax evasion was thrown out Friday by federal appeals judges who ordered a new sentencing hearing.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled that the lower court erred in calculating the amount of restitution Chrisley owed victims of her crimes.
Chrisley was sentenced in November to seven years in prison after being convicted of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and tax fraud.
The appeals court found that the lower court erred in calculating the amount of restitution Chrisley owed victims of her crimes. The court said the lower court should have considered Chrisley's ability to pay when calculating the amount of restitution.
The appeals court also found that the lower court erred in not allowing Chrisley to present evidence of her good character at her sentencing hearing.
The appeals court ordered a new sentencing hearing for Chrisley.
Chrisley's husband, Todd Chrisley, was also sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the crimes.
The Chrisleys are the stars of the reality TV show "Chrisley Knows Best."
